Our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program aims to reinforce positive behavior and reduce behavioral incidents across the school community. Using a structured reward system, students earn “Roadrunner Dollars” by demonstrating behaviors that align with our core values, such as respect, responsibility, and cooperation. Teachers distribute these dollars as they observe students consistently meeting these behavioral expectations in both academic and social settings. Students then have the flexibility to spend or save their earnings, allowing them to make choices that align with their personal goals.

Students are encouraged to make thoughtful choices with their Roadrunner Dollars. Twice a month, they can redeem these dollars the monthly event or at the School Store, where items such as toys, candy, games, and school supplies are available. This store operates on a “spend or save” principle, allowing students to make real-world budgeting decisions. Additionally, students are informed of upcoming PBIS events at least two weeks in advance, giving them time to consider saving their dollars to access larger rewards.

Special events such as Ice Cream Sundays and Popcorn & Movie Day are announced with two weeks’ notice, so students can work toward eligibility. For example, in August, students had the option to purchase snow cones for $15 Roadrunner Dollars or to save for a future event. Participation in these events is open to students who meet specific behavior goals, such as having no behavioral referrals during the month and meeting classroom behavioral expectations. This approach not only motivates students to maintain positive behaviors but also instills a sense of planning and decision-making.

How Project Benefits Students

Motivation and Engagement: By offering tangible rewards, students are more motivated to exhibit positive behaviors, leading to increased engagement and participation in school activities.
Positive Reinforcement: Regular recognition and rewards for positive behavior reinforce good habits and create a supportive and encouraging school environment.
Equity and Inclusion: Ensuring all students have the opportunity to earn and redeem roadrunner dollars promotes a sense of fairness and inclusivity, making sure no student is left out.
Reduction in Negative Behaviors: With consistent rewards for positive behaviors, students are less likely to engage in negative behaviors, leading to a safer and more conducive learning environment. 

 

Expected Outcome(s)

Decrease in Behavior Incidents
Our PBIS program aims to reduce the overall number of behavior incidents by 20% within the first year. Using last year’s total of 200 behavioral referrals as our baseline, we are targeting a reduction to 160 incidents by year-end. We will track monthly behavior referrals and analyze trends to assess the program’s effectiveness, adjusting rewards or communication strategies as needed to maintain momentum and engagement. This data will be documented and reviewed by our PBIS team to ensure continuous improvement.

Improved School Climate
To measure improvements in school climate, we will conduct semesterly surveys that gather feedback from students and staff on their satisfaction with the school environment and the PBIS program. Our goal is to achieve a 10% increase in positive responses related to school satisfaction, supportiveness, and morale compared to previous years. These surveys will allow us to gauge shifts in school climate, with particular focus on how students perceive the PBIS program’s impact on their day-to-day experiences.

Enhanced Academic Performance
A reduction in classroom disruptions is expected to positively impact academic focus and performance. We aim to see a 5% increase in average academic performance scores across reading and math by the end of the year, as students benefit from a more supportive and less disruptive environment. Academic performance will be tracked quarterly, with teachers providing regular feedback on student engagement and participation levels to correlate behavior improvements with academic gains.

Higher Engagement and Participation
By incentivizing positive behavior, we expect to see an increase in student engagement, measured by participation in PBIS events such as Ice Cream Sundays, Popcorn & Movie Day, and trips to the School Store. Our goal is for at least 75% of students to earn enough Roadrunner Dollars to participate in these events by the end of the school year. Attendance at these events will be tracked monthly, giving insight into student motivation and overall participation in the program.

Sustained Positive Behavior
Long-term sustainability of positive behaviors is crucial to the program’s success. Through consistent reinforcement, we aim for at least 80% of students to maintain zero behavioral referrals for three consecutive months by the end of the school year. This measure will provide insight into how effectively students are internalizing positive behaviors and will be tracked using referral records, with quarterly progress reports shared among the PBIS team. 

 

Detailed Cost Summary

The School Store will require an investment between $800-$1,000. This includes stocking the store with items such as toys, candy, games, and equipment, which will cost approximately $450 to $700. This setup is essential for providing students with tangible incentives to be redeemed for positive behavior.

For Ice Cream Sundays, the estimated cost is between $250 and $400 per event. This budget covers the purchase of ice cream flavors and toppings, which will cost around $130 to $250. Serving equipment will add approximately $50 to $80. These events aim to offer a delightful reward for students, reinforcing positive behavior through a fun and engaging experience.

The Popcorn & Movie is projected to cost between $500 and $700. This estimate covers the purchase of popcorn and concession stand items, which will total approximately $150 to $200. There is an additional purchase of an inflatable screen and projector for viewing both in and out doors.
