Find It Fund It Florida - Hillsborough Education Foundation

The Blast Off to Learning project will provide our students with the necessary materials to construct and launch bottle rockets. Through this process, students will explore concepts such as air pressure, force, motion, and gravity. The project will incorporate language development by providing students with vocabulary and sentence frames to describe their observations and findings. By combining hands-on experimentation with language support, we aim to create a dynamic learning environment that fosters both scientific understanding and English proficiency.

How Project Benefits Students

Our 4th-grade Title I classrooms serves a diverse population of students, many of whom are English Language Learners. While science is a core subject, limited resources hinder our ability to provide engaging, hands-on experiences. Bottle rockets offer a unique opportunity to explore fundamental science concepts in a visually stimulating and interactive way. Research indicates that hands-on learning is particularly effective for ELLs, as it provides concrete experiences to connect with abstract language.

Expected Outcome(s)

To increase student engagement and understanding of force and motion through hands-on experimentation.
To improve science performance, particularly among English Language Learners.
To develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Measurable outcomes:
* Pre and post-assessments to evaluate students’ understanding of force and motion concepts. (Newton's Law of Motion: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction)
* Student engagement and participation in bottle rocket activities.
* Teacher observations of student learning and language development.

As a Fourth grade teacher, we are always trying to get our students caught up on science skills and ready for fifth grade Science when they will be taking state assessments in Science.

Detailed Cost Summary

Each kit costs $26.95. I would like to have a kit for each child to use in one class (25 students) This will make it possible for each 4th grade class to use the kits and we will be able to reuse the kits in future years.
