The goal of this project is to enhance the literacy and organizational skills of 40 first-grade students at Reddick Elementary School by providing essential classroom materials such as paper, staples, card stock, mesh bags, and decodable books. These materials will be used to create phonics-based activities, literacy centers, and independent reading resources that support student learning in reading fluency and comprehension.
The goal is measurable through pre- and post-assessments that will track improvements in student reading fluency, phonics mastery, and comprehension. The project aligns with our curriculum by reinforcing essential literacy skills in a hands-on and organized manner.
School supplies - Markers, paints, paper, crayons, clay, pencils, sharpies, modeling dough, etc.
This project will provide first graders with the tools necessary to enhance their reading and literacy skills. The materials will be used as follows:
Paper and cardstock: For creating phonics games and printable learning resources, ensuring students have access to engaging, hands-on learning tools that can be reused throughout the year.
Mesh bags: For organizing decodable books and games for individual students, which will promote a well-structured learning environment. Students will have personalized sets of materials that can be easily accessed during literacy centers and small group instruction.
Staples and paper to print decodable books: These will be specifically chosen to align with phonics lessons, providing students with reading materials that match their current learning level and help them apply phonics rules.
This project will be permanently integrated into the classroom and will be used daily. The materials directly align with first-grade literacy curriculum standards, including phonics and reading comprehension skills. Students will benefit academically through increased fluency, better phonics understanding, and enhanced engagement in literacy activities. Additionally, these materials will foster independence and organizational skills, as students will be responsible for managing their own learning materials.
The timeline for the project implementation is throughout the 2024-2025 school year, with materials being used daily during phonics lessons, literacy centers, and independent reading time.
This project will result in measurable improvements in student literacy. Expected outcomes include:
40% increase in reading fluency scores, as measured through pre- and post-assessments conducted at the beginning and end of the school year. (STAR Reading and Running Records)
30% improvement in phonics skills, as evidenced by weekly phonics assessments. (UFLI progress monitoring)
Improved classroom organization through the use of mesh bags, contributing to more efficient literacy center transitions.
Progress will be tracked through regular assessments. Pre- and post-test data will be collected for reading fluency and phonics skills, ensuring that improvements can be documented and reported. The grant will result in increased student achievement in reading, providing a solid foundation for future academic success.
