My project goal is to help my speech and language impaired students, grades prekindergarten through fifth, to improve their speech, language and overall communication skills through hands-on, imaginative, and creative play therapy. By improving their communication skills during their weekly speech and language therapy sessions, my students will increase their articulation skills and their receptive and expressive language skills to become better communicators throughout their school day. My students' ability to effectively communicate with peers and adults during speaking situations as well as accessing their general education curriculum is affected by their communication delays.
Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.
This project benefits students as I will be able to create endless opportunities for my speech and language students to improve their speech and language communication skills. Students will enjoy motivating and engaging toy play sets during weekly therapy sessions, while allowing for an abundance of specific speech sounds and language skills to be targeted.
I will be using a "Toy Companion" assessment plan to obtain baseline data and to assess progress and attainment of specific targeted communication skills throughout their therapy sessions. Each assessment sheet for each toy play set targets various communication skills. Language skills targeted include answering "wh" (who, what, when, where, why, how) questions, using and understanding forty different verbs and four Tier II vocabulary words including definitions, synonyms, antonyms, and sentence examples to be used during conversation opportunities. Basic concept word pairs such as opposites and prepositions, adjectives, and carrier phrases are additional communication skills targeted. Carrier phrases such as "Mr. Potato Head put a ____ on his head" can be modeled for students to imitate and then produce on their own, which will help improve their oral language communication skills. All of these targeted communication skills are important and contribute greatly to students' reading skills, comprehension and other academic areas in the general curriculum. Specific speech/articulation sounds, and phonology skills are also targeted for each activity/toy play set. Speech impaired students need to be able to produce speech sounds correctly in order to be understood by peers and adults during speaking situations, and to sound out and spell words accurately when reading and writing.
In addition, all of these targeted speech and language communication skills will help speech and language impaired students meet their individual speech and language goals and objectives that are stated on their Individual Education Plans (IEPs). These toys/activities will be utilized with students and will be permanently integrated during speech and language therapy sessions, across grade levels for years to come
These play sets will provide engaging and hands-on learning through imaginative play and will provide endless opportunities for my caseload of 50+ speech and language impaired students across many grade levels to improve their overall communication skills while working towards meeting their individual and specific communication goals/objectives, as documented on their Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for years to come!
