Project Goal

The goal of this project is to acknowledge and reward students for following our schoolwide expectations and showing safety, accountability, investment, and leadership in our school community. Funding will go towards incentives to improve attendance, behaviors, and ultimately academics schoolwide on a weekly, monthly and quarterly basis.

How Project Benefits Students

The school will have a weekly, monthly and quarterly campaigns to get students and stakeholders involved with promoting positive behaviors in school and improving student outcomes. Some of the benefits of this focus include:

- Promoting a Positive School Climate - Reinforcing positive behavior rather than just focusing on negative actions. When creating an environment where good behavior is recognized and rewarded, students are more likely to feel supported, safe, and valued.

- Improving Social Skills and Emotional Regulation - Communicates clear expectations and consistent feedback

-Reducing Behavioral Issues - When students receive positive reinforcement, disruptive behaviors tend to decrease.

- Increase Engagement and Motivation - When students are recognized for their efforts, they are more likely to stay engaged in the learning process.

- Increased Academic Achievement - When students feel safe, supported, and motivated, they are more likely to perform well academically. Positive Reinforcement reduces classroom disruptions, allowing more time for instruction and improving the overall learning environment.

- Collaboration between stakeholders and students will support consistent expectations and supports creating a more unified message about behavior and success from educators and student families.

For example:
Weeks of 11/12-11/22 Focus: Accountable - Arrive to Class on Time. Students who are in class when the tardy bell rings will receive PBIS points for each class that are on time for.

Weeks of 12/2-12/13 Focus: Invested - Students will be awarded PBIS Points for beginning bellwork without reminders upon entering the class.

The campaigns may run concurrently. This Month we are focusing on Safety, however we had an additional campaign promoting Learning Gains. These campaigns are promoted through announcements, teachers, posters as well as during Pep Rallys. Although we are holding schoolwide campaigns, teachers have the ability to hold their own individual campaigns within their classrooms based on behaviors and learning gains/progress. Our next big campaign will be an academic focused Pep Rally to motivate students as we prepare for PM 3.

Students have the ability to earn up to 15 points a day (4 points for each class x 3 classes as well as an additional 3 points outside of class) for following our Shields Expectations of being SAFE, ACCOUNTABLE, INVESTED and LEADERS.

The incentives vary in points starting from 3 pts +. For example, a Patio Lunch Pass would be 3 points, Lunch Mystery snack will be 10 points, a squish toy is 8 points, etc. We also have monthly raffles that students can use their points to enter such as a United Skates 4 pack pass.  

 

Expected Outcome(s)

We expect to see an increase in school moral and improvement in the school culture and climate. Students can be rewarded for following expectations and ultimately increasing schoolwide attendance and academic performance while decreasing behavioral incidents.
Student attendance rate for the 2023-24 school year was 88% and our goal is to improve to 95% for the 2024-25 school year.
During the 23-24 school year from Jan-May there were 502 days absent from teachers and so far during the 24-25 school year there have been 265 days absent from teachers from August to this week.

During the 2023-2024 school year we had 1,419 incidents out of 2,172 overall incidents that resulted in either ISS or OSS. Our goal is to reduce the number of ISS or OSS incidents by 25%. By reducing the amount of time students are out of class for consequences will improve attendance and academic outcomes. Our goal is to incentivize the students to want to make better choices.

The items listed would be used for student incentives in the Shields Store. They would be able to redeem weekly or enter into monthly and quarterly drawings.
