Our incredibly diverse ELL (English Language Learner) population consists of 158 students with 38 different native languages. As one can imagine, communication with our ELL families is a challenge.
Smore Newsletter Builder includes a feature that allows newsletters to be translated into over 100 different languages with the click of a button. With newsletters featuring information, surveys, photos and links, ELL families will feel involved, informed and valued. Their opinions will be "heard" in surveys and opportunities for involvement and support will be understood.
Items to be featured in our ELL newsletters:
* Photos of ELLs actively learning, participating and interacting with peers
* Links to helpful resources, such as evening ESOL classes for adults
* Volunteer requests to share about holidays, such as Diwali (Hindu festival of lights) and Chinese New Year
* Volunteer requests to demonstrate customs, such as Rangoli (an Indian art form in which patterns are created on the floor using materials such as dry colored sand, flower petals, and colored rocks)
* Ongoing competition results of usage and progress on Imagine Learning (schoolwide website to support ELLs in learning English)
* Information about upcoming school events, programs, tests, fund raisers, etc.
* Surveys to allow ELL families to give input, such as preferred month to host Multicultural Night or Chai and Chat
Communication is key, and having translations in over 100 languages, all parents will be "in the know."
Parent involvement leads to academic success and improved student experience. Parents from other countries, speaking languages other than English need to know that they are as valued and important as all other parents.
To determine if information is being dispersed, there is an analytics component in Smore Newsletter Builder. The analytics that are provided are:
* Who received the newsletter
* Who opened the newsletter and how many times it was opened
* How long reader spent reading the newsletter
If this project is supported, we would immediately collect email addresses of ELL parents and send them bi-monthly newsletters. Data from the analytic component would be collected in May, 2025, to determine if 85% of families are viewing our newsletters. We would continue to use the plan into the 2025/2026 school year to get the full benefit of the program.
Since we do not have a newsletter at this time (due to lack of translation ability), any views of future ELL newsletters would be a dramatic improvement in communication. To have 85% of ELL families opening and reading ELL Newsletters in their native languages would increase parental involvement and therefore increase student academic success and enhance student experience.
