Project Goal

The goal of this project is to empower students with the tools and skills necessary to photograph and present a professionally documented portfolio of their artworks.
The students create sophisticated artworks that dominate at local contests, but these artworks don’t consistently achieve national recognition in competitions such as Scholastics or as exemplars for AP Portfolio. What sets the successful artwork apart is not the quality of the work, but the quality of the images. Top portfolios often originate from more affluent schools with additional resources like photography set-ups or a budget for a photographer.
This project will not only improve their outcomes in competitions, scholarships, and college applications, it will also introduce them to a vital skill within the creative fields. Artists often rely on visual documentation of artwork for proposals, grants, portfolios, websites, and social media – and this is an ability they can learn and refine now. Product photography is a profession unto itself!

How Project Benefits Students

Documenting 3-dimensional artworks often presents unique challenges, made more difficult when the artwork is reflective (jewelry, metals, glazed ceramics, glass, et. al.) The lightboxes and backdrop allow for the proper documentation of differently sized artworks. The items in the grant would be used to instruct students in how to properly document artwork for portfolios, scholarships, grants, competitions, and a host of other opportunities and purposes. The lightboxes, backdrops, lights, and other tools will remain available in the classroom for students to document projects and build their portfolios.
This would immediately improve the student’s current artwork documentation set-up. We would create a permanent storage area for the lightboxes, backdrops, and props (replacing the rudimentary documentation tools I taught students to build: lightboxes from cardboard boxes and white paper.)
Additionally, we would no longer be dependent on the sun/weather for proper lighting to document artwork.
 

 

Expected Outcome(s)

Students will be able to take quality photographs that document their accomplished artworks, learning a key element of professional practices for anyone in the arts. This heightened presentation will yield more awards, scholarships, and accolades for the students. It will also prepare them for a key element of being a working artist in the world.
