Project Goal
The goal of this project is to increase student interest in reading in order to improve their reading competency levels. The project will focus on 28 first and second grade special education students. Many of the selected reading materials have an accompanying CD so the struggling readers can utilize the auditory and visual benefits of text. The books were selected within the students' Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). The ZPD "identifies books at the right level to provide the optimal reading challenge without frustration."

How Project Benefits Students
Many of my ESE students who are below grade level in reading do not enjoy reading because it is difficult for them. In order to make reading more fun while improving student literacy, I want to be able to provide materials my students are interested in, are within their ZPD and allow different modalities. I want to be able to provide these materials to our students during our small group pullout sessions as well as make them available for them to sign out to read at home.
Expected Outcome(s)
I have identified in a spreadsheet each of these students' Scale Score on the Reading portion of the Winter Star (Renaissance) assessment. My expected outcome for each student after being exposed to these new reading materials is that they each improve their Scale Score by 50 points or more as evidenced by the Spring 2025 Star Reading assessment.
Detailed Cost Summary
I used the website Renaissance Accelerated Reader Bookfinder (www.arbookfind.com) to search for books within the specified ZPDs for each of the students. On that site, each book has the option of ordering it through Amazon if it is available. I created my budget with the current costs on Amazon. There will be no shipping costs since I am an Amazon Prime member and the taxes will be exempt.
