How Project Benefits Students

At Steinbrenner High School, Creative Writing III is more than just a class - it’s a hands-on opportunity for students to collaborate as a team to produce The Echo: Teen Art and Lit Mag, a student-run literary magazine. The class has been producing literary magazines since its inception, but this grant project seeks to cover the printing costs of the magazine, amplifying the impact it has on the magazine’s staff, the contributors, and the readers.

The Echo accepts submissions from teenagers in the district and around the globe, providing a unique platform for young voices. The editorial team, composed of Steinbrenner students from grades 9-12, reviews submissions, selects pieces for publications, and offers constructive feedback to contributors. They then compile the chosen works into a professionally designed magazine using industry-standard tools like Adobe InDesign and Canva. Once printed, the magazines will be distributed via school mail to creative writing and English classes, as well as school libraries, in the district, along with corresponding lesson plans.

The magazine’s impact extends well beyond its production. By highlighting the creative talents of young writers and artists, The Echo encourages more students to participate in future issues, fostering a sustainable and ever-growing platform for young voices. For the student editorial team, the project provides invaluable real-world experience in project management, publication design, leadership, and time management - skills that will benefit throughout their lives and future careers.

This initiative is not a one-time activity but an investment in a lasting tradition. The funding of the printing of this issue expands the foundation for future editions of The Echo, embedding it more securely in a creative community. The experience and skills gained by the students - both the contributors and the staff- will resonate long after the magazine’s pages are printed, preparing them to excel in creative, academic, and professional pursuits.

Planned Timeline:
January: Collect submissions.
February: Review submissions, provide feedback, and select pieces for publication. Begin designing the magazine using industry standard tools.
March: Complete the magazine layout and prepare files for printing. Use grant funds to cover the cost of printing.
April: Distribute the printed magazines and lesson plans to district high schools, libraries, and classrooms. Promote the magazine, encouraging feedback and engagement from readers.
May: Send in the final report, photos, and thank you's.

Expected Outcome(s)

This project will provide enriching professional development activities for the core 20 students, who will gain relevant experience in industry tools.

Targeted teachers who incorporate The Echo: Teen Art & Lit Mag in their curriculum will see 10% more of their students improve in the reading prose and poetry strand as assessed by the FAST PM3. In addition, if 15-20 teachers across the county incorporate the literary magazine into their teaching, we can expect results to reach 2,250-3,000 students.
