My goal is to increase student thinking, collaboration and problem-solving skills.
Using a series of teaching strategies outlined in the Building Thinking Classrooms research, I will increase student engagement, collaboration and thinking/problem-solving skills by 20% by the end of the school year. This will be measured using pre and post assessments of on task behaviors and content, as well as comparing the increase in cognitive difficulty of the tasks students are able to achieve.
Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.
Research shows that many students are "going through the motions" at school and are not actively thinking the majority of time that they are in class. Using the 14 teaching strategies in the Building Thinking Classrooms program will shift students' activity and perspective to increase their ownership of their learning, to be willing to take on more cognitively complex tasks, and to better collaborate with their peers. These skills will not only result in greater learning of the content (goal 20% increase) but will also provide the basis for lifelong success in the academic and work worlds. These materials (with minor replenishment) will be able to be used not only this year, but for years to come, thereby impacting large numbers of students. Furthermore, once I become proficient in these strategies, I will become the site expert to help other teachers implement these strategies in their classes as well.
Students' on-task behavior, learning of the content, and ability to achieve more cognitively complex tasks will increase by 20% as evidenced by pre and post data (observational for on-task behavior, assessment for learning and cognitive complexity).
