Students will be able to set up an experiment, collect data measurements and observations using analysis software from PASCO. Students will create data charts and analyze graphs using a controlled environment created by
students using the following materials listed below. The sensors will be used to explore the use of terrariums as a closed system for environmental studies, designing ways to explore structures in different ecosystems.
Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.
We will create and observe a closed system terrarium. This will allow the students to monitor photosynthesis, decomposition, germination and weather using PASCO data collectors. The sensors will create graphs for the students to analyze data and observe and reflect on outcomes, which will give the students a chance to ask questions and extend their understanding.
Focus: How can water and energy cycle through a microclimate?
Example: Weather sensor in a terrarium to understand the relationship between the water cycle and energy within a microclimate. For example, the weather sensor will be placed in a microclimate (terrarium) to understand the changes in temperature, humidity, dew point, and barometric pressure. Our terrarium can then be compared with the daily collection of outside weather.
How can we explore the effects of environmental factors in a terrarium?
Example: Rotting tomato or pumpkin – We will create an ecosystem with a decomposition arrangement. This will give us a unique biome to model and measure. With the Eco Chamber, students can control or alter conditions from light, humidity, temperature or Ph (acidity/alkaline).
*I would like to start with this one to focus on our measures.
This will be an ongoing daily investigation or experiment that will last about 2-3 weeks at a time in the classroom. This will help enhance our nature of science standards on planning an experiment and testable observations while implementing other science and math standards. Changes will be made to the terrarium as new discoveries or ideas come up.
This grant will help students understand the difference between an experiment/investigation and that science is grounded by empirical observations that are testable. The students will use the data collected to reflect and explain the experiment/investigation using observable and measurable evidence.
Students were given a progress monitoring assessment on January 21st, where nature of science questions about planning an experiment went down 7% (57% to 50%) and testable observations went down 9% (86%-77%) from our last measure. I would like to see a 20% percent increase on both of the nature of science standards above. There was also a 24% (38%-14%) decrease on chemical changes. I would like to see a 60% increase on this standard. The data will be collected by comparing the mid-year progress monitoring assessment to the end-of-year progress monitoring assessment in March/April.
