Goal

To allow 11th and 12th grade students the opportunity to see FSCJ's vocational programs, classrooms, and learning labs, in person, at the school's various Jacksonville campuses. 

 

What will be done with my students

11th and 12th grade students in regular English 3 and 4 classes will be surveyed about their interests among FSCJ's programs. This group of students is targeted because we feel they are less likely to attend a four year college after graduation and are more likely to find employment in a field requiring the skills presented by these programs. The results of the survey will be used to match students with the programs housed at individual FSCJ campuses. Students will then be transported to Jacksonville in order to see the campuses in person. Each student will visit two of the six Jacksonville campuses 

 

Benefits to my students

If you've never seen the facilities FSCJ has and the hands-on learning opportunities students have in their vocational programs, they're really quite impressive. We want to give our students who are approaching graduation the opportunity to see them for themselves. For many students, "school" and learning mean you sit in a desk and listen to a teacher talk or read information from text. That is largely what they've done throughout school grade school. However, that is often not how students learn after high school especially in the skills-based programs at FSCJ that we feel many of these students are headed for. We believe that if can get these students to see the facilities with their own eyes, we can inspire and motivate them to pursue training in programs they may not have considered before or at least provide increased enthusiasm to that pursuit.  

 

Budget Narrative

Due to the schedules on which district owned buses run, we cannot use them for this trip. Students leave FBHS, travel to Jacksonville, tour an FSCJ campus, get back on the bus to drive to another FSCJ campus for a tour, then return to FBHS. We simply can't get all this done in time for the district owned buses to return and start their elementary school routes. Private buses are a must. In addition to the buses, students miss lunch at FBHS so we plan to provided a boxed lunch upon their return, but we feel we can locate funds for this elsewhere. I should point out, that the buses we plan to use are tantamount to school buses, though privately owned. There is nothing "plush" about them and we do not feel there are more affordable options.
We also feel it is critical to not ask students to contribute to the cost of this field trip. This particular targeted group of students is not as likely as other groups to have the means to afford any contribution. Furthermore, asking for a student contribution will only discourage less-motivated students to attend and that runs entirely contrary to the intent of this activity.
