With the utilization of stability balls in the classroom, students must utilize both sides of their brain to remain balanced. When this brain activity occurs, students are ready to learn and increase focus in the classroom.A study published in the October 2003 issue of the "American Journal of Occupational Therapy" found that students with attention challenges, such as attention deficit hyperactive disorder, tended to focus better when using stability balls instead of chairs. The study revealed that students behaved better and that language skills improved, and that students and teachers preferred the use of stability balls in the classroom instead of chairs. Fidgeting helps children with ADHD concentrate, and just a little movement on the stability balls can meet their demands for expelling excess energy.
Some of the traditional chairs will be switched out with the stability balls, allowing for an increase on student performance in the classroom.
The benefits are endless. To begin, students are utilizing their brain and muscles to remain steady. When this occurs, studies have shown that student performance increases, and there is an increase in the motivation to learn.
The stability balls would replace the traditional chairs in my classroom.
