Goal

The goals of this project are to address the academic and vocational needs of adults incarcerated in the Nassau County Detention Center (NCJDC), to provide adult basic education and high school equivalency education to inmates, to offer pre and post academics and career assessments, to develop academic and career plans to assist in educational planning and career goal setting, to assist in transition planning for reintegration back into the community.

What will be done with my students

The design of the program includes four classes for implementation. Two classes for females in Language Arts/ Reading skills, and two classes for males in Mathematics. Upon registration in the program, students are assessed to determine readiness for instruction in the rigorous standards contained in the GED assessment. An individual academic plan is developed for each student reflecting instruction in their identified areas of weakness. Students will progress through their individual instructional plan by differing modalities of instruction: individual work, teacher led instruction, computer based instruction, and self reflection utilizing self scoring methodologies. Upon successful completion of a student's academic plan, and successful performance on a post assessment, students will be registered to sit for the GED exam.

Benefits to my students

As a result of intensive instruction focused upon individual student identified need, the number of Nassau County offenders receiving educational services will increase, the number of learning gains as measured by the National Reporting System (NRS) will increase, the number of offenders that earn a high school equivalency diploma will increase, and the number of released offenders that enter post-secondary education or gain lawful employment will increase.
The implementation of an updated software system as requested in this application will allow additional differentiation for instruction, as well as a resource that is more aligned with the most current form of the GED assessment.

Budget Narrative

The budget request listed is for $1000, however, applicant requests that a budget of $1800.00 be approved.
This would allow for the "stand alone" software package to be placed on six existing computers. (As per the software company, 5 is the minimum number that can be ordered.)The NCDC does not allow internet access to the inmates, thus the critical need for a stand alone version of software that is aligned to the current revisions of the updated GED assessment.
