Goal

I am asking for a budge not to exceed $500.00 to spend at a local book store such as Books Plus or The Book Loft to help me build a section in the library on Florida history and local area authors.

What will be done with my students

In the Media Center this year I would like to create a section that is dedicated to the history of Florida and the surrounding areas of Amelia Island, Jacksonville, and St. Augustine. I would fill that section with books pertaining to the rich history of Florida so that history classes could use those books in their research. I would also like to have books by local authors from Amelia Island that have written fiction novels and non-fiction books on the history of our area that include the shrimping industry, the railroad system, Pirates and mysteries that use our area as a backdrop.
I have been to Books Plus in town and the owner has an entire section on local history and local authors from picture books of the famous bed and breakfasts in the downtown area to historical ghost stories to the enriching history about Fort Clinch. I feel a similar section in my library would be a great resource for our teachers and students here at FBHS. I would love to support a local book dealer in this venture as well. For example, Maggie, the owner of Books Plus, has the knowledge of the local authors, being one herself, and she would keep me informed of new titles coming out and what is popular. I feel our students would really enjoy reading something that someone who lives in their same town has written. It may spark the creative writing juices in some young minds to pursue writing as a career.

Benefits to my students

Students are introduced to a variety of materials to help them learn and appreciate our local history on Amelia Island and surrounding areas in Florida. Students will become more familiar and comfortable with using the Media Center as a place to research and find information on local authors.

Budget Narrative
