Glass Fusing is simply the process of stacking two or more layers of compatible glass together to make a design, then placing the stacked glass into your kiln, where it melts (fuses) together.
Students will begin by investigating components of glass. We will also discuss safety when cutting glass. Students will then cut and assemble their projects by stacking glass pieces in layers. The bottom layer is often a single glass circle or square, called a “Base.” We place other glass pieces on top of this to create a design that covers the entire Base fairly evenly. The teacher will load the kiln with the projects. The kiln will take about a day to fire and cool. The entire project should take less than a week to complete.
The benefit of this project is to create and execute a fused glass project that is will express an idea, mood or feeling. Students will also be also to demonstrate the following skills: glass cutting, fusing, slumping,
casting, and making a plaster mold. Students will also be able to understand technical and aesthetic information to create fused glass that expresses the following formal qualities: line, form, shape, composition, light, texture, and shadow. A basic understanding of glass chemistry and compatibility will be introduced. Finally students will critically evaluate their own work as well as the work of another artist in the class.
This will allow 34 students in my 3D Art class to participate in the project.
