Thank you to the following investor for funding this grant.
Nassau Education Foundation - $874.50
The goal of this grant request is to increase comprehension skills of my 3rd - 5th grade students who are currently reading on K- 2nd grade levels.
A listening center will be added to the students' daily routine. After listening and following along with the book, students will answer comprehension questions, create art projects, and/or write in their journals to help increase their comprehension. After several visits to the listening center and completing activities related to the story, students will complete an AR quiz to check for comprehension. This will be a week long process.
Students with special needs often need more than a teacher reading or reading to themselves to properly comprehend a passage. A listening center will give my students to ability to listen and read / follow along at their own pace. The headphones used will allow for the individual student to control volume and cancel out distractions from the classroom. Being able to control the listening center itself will give my students the feeling of being in charge. This is not something students with special needs often feel.
A listening center, along with new audio books will help my students with comprehension and give them a sense of self-respect as they will be proud of themselves for keeping the player and CDs in good working order.
Along with the portable listening center, I've included both fiction and nonfiction texts. Historically, my students do not choose nonfiction texts on their own.
*All items were added from the Lakeshore website.
