To introduce students in grades 2-5 to online research using Kindle Fires
My elementary library curriculum currently includes lessons on using dictionaries, atlases, and encyclopedias. I want to expand my students' research skills by using Kindle Fires online capabilities. These tablets will allow me to include technology into my research curriculum. I will teach students how to phrase questions when looking up topics, how to evaluate websites, and how to locate important information in the text.
There are several benefits to having access to Kindle Fires in the library. First, my students, like most adults, want to "just Google it" when they need information quickly. By presenting them with knowledge on how to choose and evaluate websites, the students will be able to judge which online sites are creditable. The second benefit is the ability to use an online encyclopedia in the library. Our county has a site license to Britannica, but currently I can only use this resource with my students by connecting my computer to a projector. I would love for students to have more hands on opportunities using this valuable resource. Finally, students have access to devices like these tablets at home, by teaching them to become informed technology users at school, these skills will carry over to their homes.
8 Kindle Fire HD 6 (currently $99.99 each) (not sure if we can use the tax exempt number with them, if we can then I would get 9)
