Nassau Education Foundation

The 5th grade gifted students have been given an enrichment opportunity from Challenger Learning Center in Tallahassee. 5th grade gifted students will take part in a 2 hour space mission simulation featuring hands-on activities, an I-Max film and planetarium show. The package also includes in-service training, classroom curriculum materials and follow-up activities for the teacher. The prize pack is valued at $650. The goal of the activity is for students to plot a successful course to rendezvous with the comet and launch a probe to collect scientific data on the object. They must first construct the space probe and then plot the course. What seems to be a routine exploration is filled with challenges and emergencies. Each obstacle stands in the way of a successful mission which requires students to work together as a team to solve the problem.

What will be done with my students

During a Space Mission Simulation, team members work as scientists and engineers in the Space Mission Simulator. Onboard astronauts in the Space Simulator work in their counterparts in the Mission Control Simulator. These simulations provide plenty of challenges for the crews in space and on the ground. Navigating into the correct position for probe launches requires concentration and teamwork to collect scientific information and complete the mission. Additionally, other members of the crew are tasked with maintaining the health and safety of their fellow crewmates. After complete of the simulation students will be taken to the IMAX theatre as well as the planetarium. The money from this grant will be used to cover very high transportation costs to get to the Center so that the students will be able to participate in this enrichment activity that has been given to them.

Benefits to my students

Students will gain valuable decision-making skills while taking part in this real-life astronaut simulation. Students will also be exposed to various careers in science, engineering, and aeronautics. IMAX technology puts students in the center of spirited adventures and mesmerizing events in a way that no other presentation can. As astronauts have said "It is the next best thing to be there." In addition to the Simulation and IMAX presentation students will also visit the planetarium show in the 50 foot high definition digital auditorium. Students will be able to experience the galaxy with hi-tech projectors and sound. These shows will grasp students' imagination and propel them into the wonders of space. This experience may open many doors to future careers in science, engineering, and space exploration.

Budget Narrative

The total cost of the charter bus is $1,260. There are 25 students. This would cost the students approximately $50 to ride the bus. With many free and reduced lunch students there may be students who may not be able to participate in this exciting enrichment experience. I am requesting the full cost of the bus at $1,260 but if that is not available students could offset the difference of $260 at $10.50 per student. This project will service gifted students at 4 schools and 2 teachers will be involved with this project.
