Nassau Education Foundation - $204.79
As a teacher of students with various learning disabilities, I have found that many of my students struggle with traditional methods of teaching. That is why I try to integrate a variety of activities and tools that are both stimulating and encourage learning. Graphic Biographies is a resource that I feel will meets that criteria and will invite all of my students to want to read, even those who may be reluctant. Graphic Biographies are written like comic books and are not so intimidating to read, therefore students are more likely to want learn more about these historical and recent figures.
These Graphic Biographies will be used in class for book reports or mini projects that will be completed each nine weeks. Students will choose a different person each time. This grant will allow for me to purchase a collection of 23 biographies.
The Graphic Biographies will help motivate my students to want to read more (comic style graphics, interesting, and appear easier to read). They will also develop students’ technical comprehension skills such as sequencing and will improve their critical thinking skills. I plan to use these books in my English and Reading classes (15- 20 students) and I will be happy to share them with the other teacher at FBHS.
The school budget that I receive is not enough for me to purchase this collection of Graphic Biographies for my classroom. With this grant, I will be able to provide my students with a more exciting and motivational way to read about various historical and more recent figures.
