Special needs students need the opportunity to explore their world through hands on learning. By providing manipulatives of real life objects students can increase the comprehension of more complex activities. The goal of this grant is provide concrete learning activities to more abstract thinking. These materials will also provide opportunities for students to gain independence and confidence in themselves and their abilities as students.
These activities will be incorporated into the students daily schedule. Students in my class are given a task to help them gain mastery of Next Generation Sunshine State Standards Access Points. These materials will be introduced in a teacher led activity and the student will be given the time it takes to achieve mastery with little to no support. The materials are then moved into the students assigned work or task box to complete independently during small group instruction. At the end of each month the student in progressed monitored to see if the skill has been mastered or if the skill needs to be retaught. Once mastery has occurred, then the activity is switched out for higher order skill. Thus building upon their foundation of information and independence.
The students in my classroom have a variety of needs. Most of my students have an intellectual disability and/or have Autism Spectrum Disorder. These students are instructed using an alternative curriculum on alternative standards and require hands on materials to master concrete critical thinking skills. By using these hands on materials, my students will be able to demonstrate mastery of new skills taught throughout the school year. These materials will benefit up to 10 students in one special needs classroom.
The total budget for these material is $996.97. This grant will allow students to build independence while working on developmentally appropriate skills. This is on-going project and will allow student to achieve higher level thinking skills. Each center materials include a hands-on activity that pairs perfectly with a classic children’s book.
