Students who have a significant cognitive delay, need multiple opportunities with a variety of materials to gain mastery of skills taught in the special needs class. They need instruction in academics, social/emotional skills, independent functioning, and communication. The overall goal for students is to obtain functional life skills, so they may become productive members of society. The materials requested in this grant will provide concrete learning activities to more abstract thinking. These materials will also provide opportunities for students to gain independence and confidence in themselves and their abilities as students.
These activities will be infused throughout the student's day to provide opportunities for gaining independence as well as mastery of the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards Access Points. Students are given a pretest of each skill or target, then participate in teacher led small group instruction using the materials. Throughout the school day, students will have multiple opportunities to explore and retain higher order problem solving skills. Once a student becomes independent with a skill, the materials will then be moved to an independent practice center. During independent practice, students will have time to become the creator of their own knowledge by recreating stories, finding solutions to math problems, or using their newly gained scientific inquiry skills to solve a problem.
Students on Access Points need non traditional methods to explore their learning. When participating in academic tasks, they often require hand over hand assistance, visual reminders, and verbal prompting to stay on task as well as obtain mastery of the skill. These students also need the opportunity to be provided with as many hands-on, realistic materials as needed. Each center comes with realistic miniatures that build skills in size comparison, sorting, and matching. These manipulatives will help children plan, create and test solutions. These materials help students identify and sort a variety of objects, play memory games and build vocabulary skills. In addition, they will also give the students a chance to learn abstract concepts by using concrete materials.
Students in the class also need sensory integration activities infused throughout their curriculum. Using a hands-on approach to learning students are less likely to become impulsive, become easily distracted, and show an increase of planning. Using a sensory approach to learning, teacher(s) will assist the children in inhibiting and/or modulating sensory information and assist them in processing a more organized response to sensory stimuli. By using the materials listed in this grant, students have structured activities designed to change how the brain reacts to touch, sound, sight and movement.
The total budget for these material is $995.93. This grant will allow students to build independence while working on developmentally appropriate skills. This is on-going project and will allow student to achieve higher level thinking skills. Each center materials include a hands-on activity that pairs perfectly with a classic children’s book. After enjoying each story, children use the centers to boost early math & language skills. Students will work to build pre-alphabetical knowledge, numeracy skills, and build vocabulary. Students will have the opportunity to explore magnets, explore buoyancy, explore motion, use scientific inquiry skills, and use tools for observation and investigation. Each center comes with simple picture instructions students can follow on their own and to gain their much needed independence.
