Thank you to the following investor for funding this grant.
Nassau Education Foundation - $772.48
The goal is to motivate students with quality literature for read alouds. Students need the book in front of them while the teacher is reading in order to build fluency, vocabulary and comprehension and to provide accountability.
Students will have the books on their desks and will be required to keep up as the teacher reads aloud a chapter a day from the book. Students will summarize daily the previous chapter read and will make predictions about the upcoming chapters. Students will also do hands on projects based on the books.
There will be multiple benefits for the students. Their fluency, vocabulary and comprehension will increase. In addition, their motivation for reading is enhanced as students love read alouds. Also, we can refer back to the text during discussions and future lessons to relate new material we are learning such as author's purpose, genre, summarizing, main idea and details, and inferencing. The major benefit will be an increased love for reading.
These books are non consumable so they will be able to be used for many years, providing many students with the benefits, not just for one year.
