Goal

The goal of this grant is to give struggling readers (lower quartile students) in 6th grade access to high interest, age-appropriate, leveled (instructionally appropriate), STEM non-fiction texts (Who is Albert Einstein? Who is Thomas Alva Edison? Who Were the Wright Brothers?) that excite them so that they make learning gains in comprehension and academic vocabulary.

What will be done with my students

The 6th grade ELA team will use these graphic texts to aid in differentiating instruction, for extracurricular reading activities outside the classroom, and tutoring. These texts are age appropriate and high-interest, they invite students to learn about these important "disrupters/inventors/entrepreneurs" of the past. These leveled texts engage struggling readers with pictures, captions, and text, and allow students to practice non-fiction reading strategies in the Social Studies and STEM content area.

Benefits to my students

The benefit of these texts in the classroom will be measured by increased student engagement and the associated additional practice of non-fiction reading strategies that all lower-quartile students need. By using non-fiction reading strategies with highly engaging texts, students' reading comprehension will improve in the classroom and on the FSA.
