Thank you to the following investor for funding this grant.
Nassau Education Foundation - $986.41
The goal of this project is two-fold. 1. To encourage teachers across campus to utilize outdoor space in their instruction as well as provide a calm, comforting and peaceful outdoor reading environment for all of our students. 2. To give high school students the opportunity to strengthen building skills and provide FBMS with an outdoor classroom space.
Students across our campus will have access to an open-air reading area before, during and after school. In addition, teachers will have an alternative environment to have outdoor class activities across the curriculum.
The students at Yulee High School that are enrolled in the advanced level building construction classes will use this project to develop their skills on the power tools in the shop. Their plan is to complete construction during the first month of fall Fall 2019.
The value of an outdoor education is unparalleled. It is a wondrous, textured, dynamic habitat that encourages imaginative reading and exploration. Many students who struggle inside will be given the opportunity to blossom outdoors. Outdoor educational environments have a positive impact on students' emotions, brains, and potential for learning. Having the option of an alternative learning environment will provide a place for teachers to "plant and nourish the seeds of knowledge."
In addition, the Construction students at Yulee High School will benefit from advanced building techniques and the use of power tools. They will also benefit from knowing they were a part of building a beautiful outdoor class environment.
Working with Mr. Mike Landtroop, Building Construction Technology Instructor at Yulee High School, we have devised a plan to create an outdoor learning classroom at Fernandina Beach Middle School. We have budgeted for a modest outdoor classroom that will have varied seating, shade, an enclosure and greenery. The Yulee high school construction class will build the tables and volunteers will install the enclosure and sunshade.
