Goal

Obtain partial funding to certify middle school students in CPR while enrolled in the high school credit course: HOPE (Health Opportunities Through Physical Education).

What will be done with my students

In the 2021-2022 school year about 80 -8th grade students at Yulee Middle School will be taking a high school credit class HOPE (Health Opportunities Through Physical Education), which is required for graduation. This an exciting opportunity because HOPE is traditionally offered at the high school level. This is a first in Nassau County that eighth grade students will have an opportunity to earn the HOPE credit while still in middle school. By offering the HOPE class in middle school, it will help ease the demands at Yulee High School for this course.

Currently there are 38 other states in the country who require CPR as a graduation requirement. HB 157 is being proposed for consideration as part of the K-12 Physical Health Requirements. If passed, students will be required to have met the CPR training requirement in order to graduate, beginning with the 2022 9th grade cohort. By certifying students through the HOPE course at Yulee Middle School, students will have met the graduation requirement.

Benefits to my students

Students will receive a tangible hands-on learning experience to help save lives in emergency situations. The critical lifesaving skills learned in CPR will help build a lifelong foundation and confidence should those skills ever be needed to save a life. Students enrolled in the HOPE course will head to high school certified in CPR.

Budget Narrative

The cost is $50 per student. Students will cover a lab fee of $25 each to help offset the cost at the beginning of the year. We are requesting a total of $2000 ($25 per student @ 80 students) to offset the cost of the certification.
