Thank you to the following investor for funding this grant.
Nassau Education Foundation - $419.25
The goal of this grant is to equip science teachers with instructional materials that promote hands-on learning approach to how energy transfers among different objects.
Our plan is to grow the understanding of how energy transfers through various materials and provide students with hands on opportunities to energize their science lessons. Students will use the various materials to model how energy transfers in a variety of ways.
The benefits to our students will be giving them a hands-on learning experiences with resources that make abstract concepts like kinetic energy to heat energy more concrete. The steel energy transfer spheres are a crowd pleaser. Once you slam the two spheres together, they create sound as well as heat. They will even burn a hole through a piece of notebooks paper. The sci-fi tubes are a crowd pleaser as well, we already have a few and linked all 25 students together and completed a circuit. The last set of energy demonstrations require large slinky toys. The jumbo ones provide students with a great visual for waves moving while energy is being transferred. The standards for these concepts are major clusters for the End-of-Course Exam and the Science FSSA. In addition to enhancing the student learning experience, I hope to make memorable connections to everyday life.
The items requested are for the use of all science teachers. The steel spheres are available through Carolina Biological at a cost of $42.95 apiece. We are asking for 3 sets. The Sci-Fi tubes/energy rods are available through Amazon for $7.95 per tube. We are asking for 15 tubes. The Jumbo Slinky Toys are available through Amazon for $12.95 per slinky. We are asking for 12 slinky toys.
