Goal

The goal of this project is to purchase a class set of 20 Ukuleles for the music classroom at Callahan Intermediate School, which will provide students with a differentiated way to learn about music.

What will be done with my students

This project will involve purchasing a class set of 20 Ukuleles for the music program at Callahan Intermediate school. Student will work through a hands-on unit learning how to play the Ukulele. Students will learn the parts of the Ukulele, how to strum and pick, playing position and how to change through chords to allow them to play simple songs in the music classroom while they sing. The Ukulele unit will also cover music of Hawaii and traditional Polynesian songs. Students will learn to sing basic traditional songs in the Hawaiian as well as some Māori songs from New Zealand. Callahan Intermediate School has three grade levels. This project will span all three years, with each year focusing on progressive learning while developing students’ skills in music theory, coordination and engaging students in hands-on learning through collective music making.

Benefits to my students

This project will benefit all students at Callahan Intermediate School (CIS). CIS is a title 1 school and many students that attend our school may not be able to afford their own musical instruments at home. Funding this project would provide students a new differentiated way to experience music in the music classroom, while developing fine motor, expanding their knowledge of music theory, and developing teamwork through playing music as a group.

Budget Narrative

The amount requested for the grant would cover the cost of 20 Ukuleles and shipping to Callahan Intermediate school.
