The goal of the class is for each student to develop basic hand building and sculptural techniques for the production of fine art and craft ceramics. These goals will be achieved through the creation of projects that utilize the construction methods of pinch, slab, coil, and combined techniques.
Students will achieve a mastery of the basic hand building and applying basic glazes. Students will be able to demonstrate craftsmanship and apply evaluation criteria at the advanced level. Students will be able to correlate, compare and contrast different craft materials and usage to the ceramic medium. Students will identify career opportunities associated with ceramics. Student will have a firm understanding on the processes, tools, techniques, and skills necessary to complete ceramics assignment.
When students enter into the ceramics class they not only learn how to be creative, but they learn how to improve their motor skills, their self-esteem, and how to problem solve in a safe setting. Ceramics gives children the ability to be creative and think beyond the conventional norms. Clay is easy to handle and children quickly learn their mistakes can be rolled back into a ball, so they can start over. Ceramics can improve children’s motor skills by giving them the chance to engage their arm and hand muscles. Ceramics can improve self-esteem because children have control over their projects and can quickly see results. Ceramics class is also a perfect environment to learn how to solve problems without the fear of failing. It requires children to experiment and solve problems by trying new things.
This will provide the class enough clay and glaze to last the entire year.
