Every year as a reading teacher, our number one goal is to foster a love for reading. As we continue to navigate through new state standards and using our recently adopted reading Benchmark curriculum, we continue to think outside of the box about ways we can do just that.
We like to encourage a mixture of some hands-on activities that can be completed by the students and used to help engage them in the text not only from our new curriculum but also from the suggested grade level reading list given to us by the state. The priority for any reading teacher is to think creatively so that we can spark a love for reading in all of our students. In order to do this, at times, we have to create exposure to text that the students can hold and take it a step further using a variety of manipulatives to give our students.
The goal is to have the ability to expose all students to as many different varieties of text as possible. We would
like to have different manipulatives to use at our teacher table that relates to the unit topic and essential question as well as utilize the reading list that was provided from the Florida Department of Education to take the opportunity to encourage student interaction with multiple genres and skills. The new state standards and curriculum require consistent spiraling of standards and that means we as reading teachers, need to find a way to introduce as many texts as possible for our students to create the background knowledge and vocabulary exposure needed to be able to successfully master comprehension skills. For example, "Chasing Vermeer" is on the state suggested reading list and lends itself to spiraling many literary skills. We will be able to pair this text with an informational text and create the lesson including all state benchmarks in reading across genres. This very concept gets a little complicated for students because they have to use all of their reading skills in the various texts throughout the school year. One way to get the students invested and engaged in the text is to give students things like their detective kits to use while reading during small groups. Our students enjoy having the opportunity to interact while learning and reading in their text. Students will then use their detective notebook to implement their reading strategies like writing a summary or making inferences. The final piece would be as they are collaborating with their peer partner and engaging in their critical thinking process, they can use the decoder light to share out their responses. By being able to complete lessons in such an engaging way, students will absorb everything they read and all the skills they are being introduced to.
If we can successfully find ways for all of our fifth-grade students to encourage engagement in their reading by putting a book in their hand and by using hands on manipulatives to help them navigate the text, we will be able to inspire a
love of reading at a critical age that will affect them not only during their fifth-grade school year but as they continue through school for years to come.
These manipulatives would be either for the table of students in each reading classroom to enjoy or for the teacher to use as
engagement and part of the pre- reading strategy. The books will be placed in the classroom library for not only students next year to enjoy but many more year after year as well.
