The goal for the Safari Sensory Room is to provide a calming and relaxing environment to facilitate a more functional arousal to increase attention within the classroom environment.
The Safari Sensory Room will be a fun room with a purpose. If a student is demonstrating sensory dysregulation, the student can take a break from the classroom and visit the sensory room. The room that will be utilized as the sensory room is attached to one of the ESE classroom, however, the other ESE classrooms will have a key to access the room when needed. While the student is in the sensory room, they will be provided time to get the sensory input they are seeking. Timers will be present in the sensory room in order to alert the student of when the break will be over.
Students in the ESE (Exceptional Student Education) program in Nassau County are EXCEPTIONAL students. Each student is unique in the way they learn within the classroom. Many of the students in ESE have sensory seeking behaviors. They may seek vestibular input (such as swinging, rocking, climbing, jumping) or proprioceptive input (such as heavy work, scooter board, crashing, or crawling). When a student is seeking a certain input, but is unable to obtain it, the student may become dysregulated. Behaviors often observed when a student is dysregulated include fast/hard movements, loud voice, unable to follow directions, impulsivity, and limited attention. These behaviors can significantly impact the student's ability to learn within the classroom. The Safari Sensory Room will provide many opportunities to get sensory input (both vestibular and proprioceptive) in order for the student to become regulated. Once a student is regulated, they will likely participate in the classroom with improved ability to follow directions, posture, attention, emotional regulation, body awareness, and fine motor skills.
To complete the Safari Sensory Room, approximately $1186.90 will be needed to obtain sensory supplies and tools. The calming sensory peapod, compression tunnel, crash pad, climbing jungle gym, scooter board, and therapy ball will be needed for the students who seek proprioceptive (heavy) input. The rope disc swing, rocking chair, and trapeze swing will be needed for the students who seek vestibular input. The rain makers, lighted fish tank, noise canceling headphones, fiber optic lamp, star light projector, sensory tent, rope lighting, and waterfall sensory table are needed to help facilitate a calming/relaxing environment for the students who may display over-stimulated behaviors. The tactile sensory bins (rice, water beads, and kinetic sand with animals), brushes, and vibration bug is needed for the students who seek tactile input. The therapy mat and rugs are needed to position under equipment in order to facilitate a safe environment. Lastly, the safari animal borders and hanging vines help bring the safari theme to life.
