This is an exciting project that brings students together to engage in a "hands-on" science and to promote a greater interest and love of science for students and the classroom. This project gives students the agricultural connection and experience that is so deeply rooted in our community.
All students in 3rd grade with have the same opportunity to have this hands on experience with hatching eggs in the classroom. Students will be involved in monitoring the rotation of eggs, as well as maintaining the correct temperature and humidity in the incubator. Students will keep daily records of temperature and humidity checks and log the daily turning of the eggs.
With this grant we will be able to sustain this project yearly in all 3rd grade classes. This project connects to our curriculum by allowing students to ask investigative questions, understand how heat is being used to warm the eggs, classify animals into categories such as egg laying and non-egg laying animals, and vertebrates and invertebrates.
3rd grade Science Standards connect with this project by giving students the opportunity to learn about caring for living things, learn about life cycles, and see the difference between animals that lay eggs and those that have live births; all of which will give students a deeper understanding of life science.
200 students will participate annually in hatching eggs in the classroom.
$800 will cover the cost of one egg incubator for each third grade classroom. The incubators come equipped with an automatic egg turning, humidity monitoring, and candler.
