Goal

Animal Production - which includes beef cattle, dairy cattle, swine, sheep, goats, poultry, rabbits and other animals used in the food system. Many of my students do not have access to real experiences with live animals. By having a market lamb and dairy goat production on campus students will have the opportunities to market animals, potentially practice replacement breeding animals and interact with food systems. 

What will be done with my students

Goats are important producers of meat, milk, fiber, and other products. However, goats are also raised or kept for a wider range of uses, such as brush control, livestock shows, packing, and as lively companions.
What is the purpose of a dairy goat?
For human consumption, goat milk is used primarily in cheese production and is also consumed as milk, cultured milk products, ice cream, and butter. In the United States, goat milk and other dairy goat products are valued by a growing number of connoisseur consumers. One of the other reasons to consider goats, particularly dairy goats, is because they are easy to milk. They are smaller and more manageable than cows, for example. They don't produce as much milk, so it doesn't take as long to milk them, either. Goats don't need a lot of feed, but they do like it.
Students will feed, water, groom, and care for goats.  

Benefits to my students

Goats distract kids and grandkids from cellphones and games but they can be used in more formal educational programs. FFA offers children fantastic learning, development, and social opportunities. Through these programs, kids learn responsibility, teamwork, leadership, and a sense of self worth. Because of goats’ smaller size, they are ideal for beginners or children whose families don’t have the time, money, or space needed for larger animals like cows and horses. Agriculture students at Hilliard Middle Senior High will be getting hands-on experience with more than raising and caring for goats. They're also learning to market cuts of goat meat through a food cooperative and local butcher. Students will be able to have production systems.  

Budget Narrative

Garden facilities exist to raise goats with access to electricity and water. We only need to stall out pens and secure goats.
