One part of this thematic classroom project will ‘revolve’ around learning about all things space exploration, the universe, and our solar system. The second part will focus on our “Restaurant Retell” with a focus on reading comprehension, story elements, and reading to re-tell all parts of a story. These thematic lessons, focusing on STEM and comprehension, will help first graders at Callahan Elementary become successful in these areas of learning.
With the Benchmark reading series that we are required to use, there is a three-week unit themed around exploring the universe and space. With the ability to transform our classrooms to match this thematic learning unit, we can create the perfect outer space classroom where students will feel as if they’ve traveled to space. In Benchmark, we also have a three-week story retelling unit that we theme around restaurants. This is when we transform our classroom into “Restaurant Retell”. Students are transformed into chefs and the classroom is their own personal restaurant. Students can piece together the “ingredients” of the books (characters, settings, etc...), retell the completed “recipes”, and create their own “delicious” stories. All the work we’re able to put in for these transformations makes our everyday classrooms inviting and exciting. The students feel truly immersed and involved in their everyday learning. The items purchased will be used yearly in every first-grade classroom at CES.
With our space exploration unit, giving students more STEM related activities and resources will help strengthen their skills in STEM areas. This is a much-needed career field for the future of our universe. In addition, providing all first-grade students at CES with a fun environment and extra resources to help with retelling will help with their STAR reading scores. These scores are monitored for promotion, progress monitoring, and school-wide state scores. Being able to retell what they have read directly correlates to the STAR test. Room transformations provide students with an engaging learning environment and allow them to see things in a different and exciting way. Looking at our grade level STAR data, retelling is a target area for first graders to improve upon.
Teachers will keep all space and restaurant kits in their rooms to be shared between partner teachers during the units and transformation times. Items are not consumable, so they can be used year after year with all CES first graders.
