Nassau Education Foundation

Reading is a vital skill for our children. It is necessary not only to become a productive member of society, but also and more importantly, reading gives you access to the world. From learning about a new culture or invention to escaping the worries and struggles of life with a funny story, reading opens multiple doors of opportunity. For all these reasons and more, the goal of our project, Reading Trackers, is to build children’s awareness of how often they are reading. Furthermore, our hope is to have students take ownership of their reading and become independent, responsible thinkers.

Goal

Reading is a vital skill for our children. It is necessary not only to become a productive member of society, but also and more importantly, reading gives you access to the world. From learning about a new culture or invention to escaping the worries and struggles of life with a funny story, reading opens multiple doors of opportunity. For all these reasons and more, the goal of our project, Reading Trackers, is to build children’s awareness of how often they are reading. Furthermore, our hope is to have students take ownership of their reading and become independent, responsible thinkers.

What will be done with my students

This project has two parts. The first part occurs during the first semester of school. Between August to December, students will be tracking their reading through their Accelerated Reader (AR) points. When students have earned five points, they will receive a lanyard. As they continue to read, they will earn a pin/button to place on their lanyard. Pins/buttons will be given when they earn ten points and for every increment of five points thereafter. By receiving a physical, tangible item, our hope is that students will become more aware of how often they are reading and how this impacts their achievement in the classroom. The second phase of this project occurs from January to May. With the beginning of a new year and a new semester, students will restart tracking their AR points. When they have earned five points, they will receive a bracelet. As they continue to read, they will earn a charm for their bracelet. Charms will be given when they earn ten points and for every increment of five points thereafter.

Benefits to my students

One benefit for our students would be to feel successful. Research clearly shows that students who read more often and more frequently have more achievement in the classroom. Experiencing success and the feelings of pride and joy which come with that experience can be a powerful influence in a child's life. When a child experiences success, they become more confident in their abilities and in themselves. This leads to students trying new activities and becoming more assertive in their beliefs. While high grades and test scores are all wonderful triumphs for our students, the most important accomplishment we could give these children is the experience of showing them how hard work (through perseverance and grit) leads to great success and becoming proud of yourself.

Budget Narrative

These prices come from Amazon. Next year, we project to have approximately 220 fourth graders. For charms and pins, our estimate is based on each student receiving five pins or charms during each semester.
