Goal
I would like to create a digital classroom in my 7th & 8th grade Language Arts classes at Christa McAuliffe Middle School. I am hoping to reduce paper use, increase technical literacy of my students, develop student independence, increase group work skills, and spread learning beyond the classroom. In order for this to be successful, I would like to purchase a classroom set of iPads and the supporting apps. Due to their ease of use, their adaptability, their ability to connect to the Internet, the many apps that are used to enhance learning, iPads are the way to go. My goal is to experiment with my students doing more of their work digitally. This allows their work to be more freely available to other students and teachers. This allows for more independence in student learning and motivates them to do more work outside the classroom.
What will be done with my students
iPads are easy to use. They can be used for drawing and for typing. They easily connect to the internet, which is readily available for students to use at my school already. Students can easily access email and share student work in a collaborative way with others. iPads have great battery life, which makes for great classroom use throughout the school day with five different class periods.
Through the use of iPads the students will learn to become responsible for their own learning. When we learn a new concept, the students will be able to do an activity multiple times in order for them to attain mastery. Student engagement will increase due to the interest of technology with middle school aged students. As students are working on the iPads they will receive feedback in a few ways: some applications give immediate feedback, I will give the students feedback, and they will be able to receive feedback from their peers. Deeper learning occurs when students receive immediate feedback.
Benefits to my students
I expect my students to become learners outside of the classroom. I hope for students to
be able to learn to engage in meaningful math discussions in the classroom. They will
learn how to collaborate with other student, not only in their class period, but also in all
classes. The goal is for the iPads to improve academic performance, increase
engagement and motivation, add instructional flexibility, and integrate focus on content
quality and design.
Budget Narrative
The largest cost is the actual class-set of iPads with a cost of $8,225. The other costs are items needed to maintain the well being of the iPads themselves. We will need 25 iPad cases to keep the iPads protected at all times from any wear and tear, as well as accidental falls. The ipad charging stations will be used to lock up & charge the iPads when they are not in use by the students. The final cost is $100 to use to purchase the initial learning apps for the devices. These apps will be used on a daily basis to increase student engagement and learning.
