Goal

To reduce the number of struggling first-grade students who are below grade level and have demonstrated reading and writing difficulties. Additionally, staff that are chosen to participate and implement the program will have access to a professional learning community to increase their knowledge,
understanding, and expertise of literacy and language acquisition instruction, which ultimately will benefit the entire school.

What will be done with my students

Select struggling students in first grade who have demonstrated below grade level learning based on various data points will participate in small group (4 students per group) intensive intervention instruction based on the Reading Recovery program. Students will receive 30 minutes of daily instruction from a Reading Recovery trained teacher. Students will be continuously monitored throughout the school year assessing their progress and growth.

Benefits to my students

Reduce the number of students identified for remediation, immediate intensive intervention through the Response to Intervention model, and possibly ESE identification.
Increase the number of highly qualified literacy teachers.
Increase school/system-wide capacity for struggling learners, particularly in first grade in reading and writing.
Reduce the long-term effects on lower-performing students and decrease possible retention.
Reading Recovery research data has shown the following:
★ 99% of the students made growth
★ 81% of the students made 1 year’s growth
★ 63% of the students made more than 1.5 year’s growth
★ 49% of the students made 2 year’s growth
★ 40% of the students are on or above grade level
