Goal
The Link Crew program is a year long orientation and transition program that sets the foundation of high school success for Freshman. It creates a positive, united school culture that assist students in being comfortable at school from the first day. Upperclass students mentor a group of 10 freshman per leader to create create connection and build community during a high risk transition year.
What will be done with my students
The year begins with a interactive and spirited freshman orientation. The Link Leaders (Current Junior and Seniors) are assigned a crew of 10 freshman to lead and engage in fun, positive and informative activities that focus on a successful transition to high school.
Link Crew Leaders are a current cross-section of the the student body representing the diversity of SRHS. This assists in freshman being able to identify with the community at large and feel comfortable. Leaders are given a two day training on how to mentor freshman and lead activities. Throughout the rest of the year, leaders continue training in communication, organization and leadership skills.
Link Crew leaders continue to support freshman through social and academic follow-ups. These activities build school community and focus on activities such as sports nights, eating lunch together and individual discussions on school success.
Benefits to my students
The transition to high school is a major life event of a young person. Various studies indicate that the transition is marked by an increase in social/emotional turmoil that can set the stage for a decrease in academic achievement and social adjustment. Link Crew provides the connection and foundation for adolescents to begin their high school experience with support from peer role-models. These students are more likely to develop and sustain positive social relationships with peers and with adults. Students that have a successful transition are move likely to achieve in the 9th grade, to attend school regularly and not to drop out
Likewise, feeling a part of the community can benefit a school community by an overall decrease in behavioral referrals and suspensions. Students will feel a part of a community that supports their success throughout high school and more likely to exhibit respectful behavior
Budget Narrative
Link Crew Program is a sustaining program and costs for the first year are initially the most expensive. The 3 day training is required for staff who will train Link Crew leaders. Once training is done, the yearly expenses are minimal.
The Orientation is the largest event, requiring LINK leaders to wear t-shirts in order for Freshman to easily be able to identify them. The food for the event as well as future events is a rough estimate.
