Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 44

Our Vertical Garden has been a bountiful addition to our school wide gardening project! The students have taken great pride in harvesting produce that has been grown in these mounted pots. Even the ESE class has thier own set of pots that they routinely care for. It also provides a nice visual from the classrooms that is aesthetically pleasing as well as providing a

real time lesson in Life Science. The garden also acts as a barrier between the street and our outdoor classroom. More classrooms are now beginning to utilize this space as they are learning science and math standards. They are also making the connection between how food is grown and how it gets to their table.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

We are installing a school garden and would like to add a vertical garden aspect. This will also serve as a "wall" to our exterior classroom.

What will be done with my students

Students will assist in assembly of the wall, assist in selecting what to plant, do all planting, and be the primary group responsible for maintenance of the wall. This system comes designed for that purpose. Students will study nutrition, as well as what plants will grow best in this format. We hope to provide students with produce to take home - studies prove that children are more likely to eat vegetables that they grew.

Benefits to my students

The benefits of vegetable gardening are endless: we will use math, science, and research to learn what plants will be most successful in our climate. We will hopefully reap the benefit of our work and have fresh vegetables to take home and enjoy. Students will study nutrition and the necessity of crop rotation. I believe that a student that can learn to garden will have a vested interest in having a healthy earth and be inspired to go green. The plastic portions of this kit are made 100% from recycled milk cartons - again a way to inspire being responsible global citizens.

Budget Narrative

The above link is for the website that will provide the entire kit. We hope to eventually get the add on of a drip irrigation system, but this time of year in our climate - it's not required.
