Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 460

The students at Bethune Academy have enjoyed the bird garden habitat. Cardinals have been seen flitting around the garden and more bird varieties can be heard. Second graders have learned about different birds, what they eat, and how different kinds of birds like different kinds of foods. They also learned about how different birds have adapted to have certain kinds of beaks to help them eat the kinds of foods that they like. After researching birds and creating artwork about them, two students' artwork made it into the K-2 Learning To Be Me artshow at Polk Museum of Art.

Second and third graders have drawn outside making observational drawings featuring the plants, birds, and insects around the school which include the bird garden. After the current unit on rainforests, third graders will learn about wildlife photography and take turns using digital cameras to capture the beautiful plants, insects, and birds. Fifth graders have observed the bird garden and Mrs. Tutwiler's class is designing a painted banner for the fence behind the bird garden with the theme, "B.A. Shines," which includes images of the bird garden and beautiful wildlife surrounding the school.

Thank you to the donors that have made such an amazing contribution to this garden!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to create a beautiful bird watching area where students can study birds like artist John James Audubon did, make observational drawings and take wildlife-themed photographs.

What will be done with my students

This bird watching area will be a permanent addition to Bethune Academy's campus. All students will have an opportunity to observe and study local birds like artists and scientists throughout the school year. Students grades 2-5 have sketchbooks that they will practice drawing the birds from real life in. Second graders will choose a local bird to study more in depth and create a mixed media art project about it this fall. Third grade students will be introduced to wildlife photography in the spring and have an opportunity to take their own digital photographs of local birds that we attract to our bird watching area.

Benefits to my students

Approximately 460 students will be impacted by this grant. Expected outcomes include student connection with nature, student knowledge of our local environment and its inhabitants, and successful incorporation of science into art units.

Budget Narrative

These items include everything needed to create an area birds will be attracted to and thrive in. This list includes bird feeders, houses, attractive plants, and a variety of bird feed to attract a variety of birds. The complete bird feeding station also includes a small bird bath.
