Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 33

Our school garden has been a huge success.  Students enjoy weeding, watering, and harvesting tomatoes, greens, peppers, eggplants, and cauliflower.

We are learning about invasive species of plants and their impact on Polk Couny's agricultural economy and waterways.  Students enjoy tasting vegetables from our garden and seem to have a real appreciation for and pride in the produce.

Through Gardening for Nutrition students have learned of the importance of vitamins and minerals.  When students see pictures of Rickets and Scurvy in their research, they are highly motivated to put down the Takis and pick up some fruits and vegetables.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

We are RIPE for a new adventure - we are creating an edible schoolyard outdoor classroom to learn, grow, and harvest.

What will be done with my students

Students will plan garden layout, select plants, plant seeds, maintain garden, harvest and weigh produce, keep accurate records, and eat the bounty of their work.

Benefits to my students

The benefits of vegetable gardening are endless: we will use math, science, and research to learn what plants will be most successful in our climate. We will hopefully reap the benefit of our work and have fresh vegetables and fruit to take home and enjoy. Students will study nutrition and the necessity of crop rotation. I believe that a student that can learn to garden will have a vested interest in having a healthy earth and be inspired to go green.
