Goal is to secure funding to improve an embryology project with the addition of an automatic egg turner and an egg candler. Teacher has previously secured two incubators and one automatic egg turner, a breeding box and warming lamp as well as feeders, but wants to expand the project so two classrooms can present the project to our school's four 4th Grade classes.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 88

Our embryology project, "On That Farm There Was a Chicken ... E, I, E, I ... So We'll Know!"  will be conducted in the spring following the Florida State Assessments (FSA) in writing, reading and math and in conjuntion with Life Sciences state standards instruction.  The project itself is a "cross-curriculum" project encompassing skills related to reading, writing, math, science and social studies as students explore not only the life cycle of the chicken, but the impact of the poultry industry.  Students will be researching various breeds of chickens as well as the development of the embryo and report their findings in detailed reports and oral presentations.  Students will be charting the development of the embryo as seen within the egg itself using the candler and incorporate the observation skills -- noting changes in their science lab notebooks.  Our students will be sharing their findings with students in other grade levels -- further impacting the education of others. We are grateful for the opportunity to have these first-hand experiences and appreciate the generosity of our donors.  This project will not just impact students this year with this one experience, but in succeeding years. As the project unfolds, we will be posting photos to this site.  Once again, we thank those who value the education of our students and unselfishly give of themselves on their behalf.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Goal is to secure funding to improve an embryology project with the addition of an automatic egg turner and an egg candler. Teacher has previously secured two incubators and one automatic egg turner, a breeding box and warming lamp as well as feeders, but wants to expand the project so two classrooms can present the project to our school's four 4th Grade classes.

What will be done with my students

Students will explore the "life cycle" of baby chickens from fertilization through hatching. A detailed project, with 4-H ties is utilized and has been successful in past years. Students will be responsible for observing their "adopted" egg as the embryo develops into the baby chick. In addition, students research the breed of chicken (as a local breeder "loans" eggs for the project and the hatched chicks are returned to the breeder upon completion of the project).

Benefits to my students

Benefits of this "life cycle" science project (Embryology) ties together fundamental Science skills, math skills and reading/writing skills as students will learn about the life cycle of a chicken from fertilized egg through hatching. Students record observations in Science Lab books and research the breed to create reports and/or PowerPoint presentations. In addition, students will report their findings to the student body at large through the school's in-school morning "television" program.

Budget Narrative

These two items are available through Stromberg's Chicks and Game Birds (on-line). The automatic egg turner fits with the teacher's current Hovabator incubator. The egg candler, while not the most expensive, will be effective and protect the eggs.
