The goal of "Making MATHletes" is to create students who know how to think through and solve complex math problems.

Through the use of the Problem Solving and Mathematical Thinking Skills "Think Tanks," teachers will help students develop the ability to persevere through and successfully solve higher-order thinking math problems. The "Think Tanks" provide activities that can be used in small group instruction, independent practice centers, math journal activities, and whole class discussions.

Goal

The goal of "Making MATHletes" is to create students who know how to think through and solve complex math problems.

Through the use of the Problem Solving and Mathematical Thinking Skills "Think Tanks," teachers will help students develop the ability to persevere through and successfully solve higher-order thinking math problems. The "Think Tanks" provide activities that can be used in small group instruction, independent practice centers, math journal activities, and whole class discussions.

What will be done with my students

All students in grades 1st-5th will use the "Think Tanks" during the daily, 90-minute math instructional block.

Out teachers attend weekly math cooperative planning. As Math Coach, I am responsible for facilitating these sessions. Each week, teachers will decide which questions from the "Think Tank" fit their instructional needs as well as the method in which it will be used (small group instruction, independent center activity, whole group discussion, etc.). This information will be documented weekly in their whole group and small group lesson plans.

In addition, the "Think Tanks" will be used as a resource for "Making MATHletes: One Problem at a Time." At the beginning of each month, K-5 students are given a higher-order thinking math problem as voluntary, school-wide homework practice. "Making MATHletes: One Problem at a Time" is intended to challenge students and their parents as they work together to complete the task. While completion is voluntary, students who complete and return the task will be recognized and rewarded.

Lastly, the "Think Tanks" will be included in our school's K-5 Math Night. Math night consists of varying activities where parents and students work together to complete and solve math problems of varying difficulty levels. During this time, our "MATHletes" will have the opportunity to show everyone what they know and can do!

Benefits to my students

Students in grades 1st-5th will receive on-going, grade-level specific practice in math problem solving. Students will learn how to visualize complex problems and practice the skills necessary to tackle higher-order math tasks.

At our school, grades 1st-5th are departmentalized - half teach reading and social studies and the other half teach math & science. As a result, there are 2-3 math teachers in grades 1st-5th. This will allow for each grade level to receive one Problem Solving and Mathematical Thinking Skills "Think Tank." Moreover, weekly, math cooperative planning will ensure teachers are properly prepared to share this resource within their content area.

Through preparation, planning and proper implementation, every student in grades 1st-5th will use this resource.
