To teach students about the electromagnetic spectrum while conducting a a research project with the National Park Service by measuring the beach background lighting with instrumentation to measure the background lightning optical spectrum.
Goals:
1. Reduce Turtle migratory disorientation for egg laying.
2. Increase environmental awareness.
Provide hands-on training in the operation of test and measurement instrumentation.
3. Contribute to the National Park Service database.
Students will use a Multiple Unihedron Sky Quality Meter to measure background lighting. The project will expose students to wildlife conservation and Marine Biology topics.
1. Provide real world STEM experience for students.
2. Provide hands-on Test and Measurement activity.
3. Build on classroom instruction concerning the electromagnetic spectrum.
4. Provide an opportunity for students ti interact with scientists employed with the National Park Service.
The measurement system was developed and is manufactured by the Instrumentation Division of the National Park Service. Their estimate for a unit is $600 to $700 that includes a professional tripod, something we don't need since we have Land Surveying grade tripods already. $500.00 will cover the cost of the necessary light measuring instrumentation.
