To promote a love of reading in grades 3-5 our school participates in the Sunshine State Young Readers Program. 15 titles are selected by a state committee each year and students in grades 3-5 read the books. They earn charms for each book read and if they read 5 of the books they can join our school's SSYRA club. The books are in high demand and each year the media center strives to have at least 3 copies of each title. These funds would be used to purchase SSYRA titles for the 2016-17 school year.

Through this project, the students will apply their knowledge of teamwork, rhythm and patterns to the study of how different types of sounds are created while also learning the science behind building their own instruments. This project will utilize strategies they are learning in their general classrooms about spatial awareness, scientific studies about sound waves, and the Engineering process used to build the instruments. It's a great cross-curricular musical experience that gives the students something they can take ownership of.
