Goal
The goal is to purchase owl pellet kits for all the 4th grade students to gain a unique hands-on learning experience about the food chain.
Category
Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.
What will be done with my students
This will be a one-time project completed over two days. It is planned towards the end of the school year (March-April), when it aligns with our grade's standards SC.4.L.17.2 and SC.4.L.17.3. Those standards relate to this activity because the students need to learn that animals cannot produce their own food and that the energy the owls receive from their prey can be traced back to the sun. After being introduced to food chains, our students will first read a book about owls that includes information about their diets. The students will complete an activity where they predict what they will find in an owl pellet. Each student will be given a large owl pellet to dissect with tools. They will have charts to help them identify what they find within the pellet. Students will try to put the bones together to try to identify what the owl ate. They will conclude with an activity about what they observed during the dissection and answer questions related to the standards.
Benefits to my students
The students will get to explore and gain a better understanding of the standards SC.4.L.17.2 and SC.4.L.17.3. When I did this activity years prior, many students shared that it was the most memorable experience of 4th grade. This helps to engage the students in Science and encourage them to explore and learn. This will benefit 6 teachers and 125 4th grade students.
Budget Narrative
The money will be used to purchase 13 owl pellet kits. Each kit has materials for 10 students. Tax and delivery fee is included in the total.
