This project will help to provide students with a classroom triple beam balance. Currently, the entire school must share a few balances. It would be more convenient if we had our own grade level set for our investigations and explorations. I also would like to have a giant thermometer for each class so that students can see up close what they look like and how they work.

Category

Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.

What will be done with my students

There are several explorations that would benefit from these items, including properties of matter and changes in matter. One Florida benchmark standards that would be incorporated for measurement are SC.2.P.8.1: Observe and measure objects in terms of their properties, including size, shape, color, temperature, weight, texture, sinking or floating in water, and attraction and repulsion of magnets. Another is C.2.P.9.1: Investigate that materials can be altered to change some of their properties, but not all materials respond the same way to any one alteration.

Benefits to my students

Having a grade level set of these tools benefits the students because we would have access to the specific materials for use at any time. We would not have to schedule a time of use with the other grade levels at our school. This gives students the opportunity to learn how the science tools work frequently in the class setting.

Budget Narrative

I would be purchasing six triple balance beams and 5 large thermometers that are large for the whiteboard. This would ensure that each teacher on the second grade team, including our gifted class, would have their own set to use
