I am looking for class sets of specific books to assist me in helping my students broaden their interest in different genres of text. I am implementing literature circles to engage students in reading and promote collaboration. In turn, this will help them be more successful in regard to academics. If students are given the opportunity to read engaging and new books with peers, it will encourage them to continue reading outside the classroom. Knowledge is power.

My goal is for every student to “read to learn” instead of just learning to read. I want to open their minds to all different genres of text, ones they would maybe never think to read based on the title, or the illustration on the cover.

Benefits to my students

About half of the students that come to me each year have little to no interest in reading. I have found that these specific books, that I have read myself first, when read to students in prior years, kept the entire class begging for more. I want to instill a love for reading in my class this year and use it as a center's activity to help them continue to grow academically. Students would partake in literature circles daily after instruction to work both independently and collaboratively with their classmates. They would be sharing what they have learned and having group discussions. This activity will also give students confidence in themselves and their reading abilities by having others to work alongside them. This smaller setting will make them more comfortable which can aid in their growth as well. Students will be able to harness their learning and how they want to display their knowledge. They can use programs such as PowerPoint or Canva, write a paper, or choose another way to present information to their peers.

Budget Narrative

I will be purchasing the class sets for these five books from the SSYR list: Bound for Home, Not Quite a Ghost, Not an Easy Win, The Grip, and When Sea Becomes Sky.

These materials will be used in the classroom during centers when students are reinforcing the skills they had learned that day. Also, having this activity will benefit them because they will be reviewing the skills from weeks past that are still needed throughout the remainder of the school year to be academically successful.
