Goal

The goal of this grant is to support struggling readers by providing exciting, engaging and valuable literacy practice tailored to specific needs for use in class and at home.

Category

Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.

What will be done with my students

I would like to set up “Literacy Kits” for 3rd grade students who are struggling with foundational reading skills such as phonics, vocabulary and background knowledge. In each kit (or zippered pouch) students will have a phonics activity and game that highlights a specific skill such as: short and long vowels, consonant blends and digraphs, multi syllable words, etc.

Included in the pouch will also be vocabulary cards, a reading fluency/ timed reading activity and/or a high interest trade book.

These kits will be used in small group or one on one instruction with students who are in need of an extra level of support to meet 3rd grade English Language Arts benchmarks.

For further reinforcement of these skills students will take the kit home and practice with a parent then return the kit to school to swap out for a new one.

These kits will be housed in a skill library and repeatedly used as a permanently integrated part of our classroom Language Arts instruction.

Benefits to my students

I believe that repeated exposure and practice with phonics, vocabulary and reading fluency will lead to student mastery of the basic building blocks of reading and further allow students to develop deeper reading comprehension of more rigorous texts.

Students will gain confidence by practicing with literacy kits both in school and at home. These kits will also provide parents with a tool to help their child sharpen skills. So many parents of struggling readers ask me what can they do to support their child. These literacy kits will put tools into the hands of parents that will be tailored to the child's individual needs.

In the early grades k-3, the Florida BEST standards emphasize explicit,
systematic phonics instruction as the foundation of literacy. Decoding and fluency are essential to creating
proficient readers. When decoding is effortless, a reader’s limited working
memory is freed up so the reader can focus on meaning. These kits will help those who struggle!

These are the Florida BEST 3rd grade standards that will be supported by this grant:

LAFS.3.RF.3.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding
words.
a. Identify and know the meaning of the most common prefixes and
derivational suffixes.
b. Decode words with common Latin suffixes.
c. Decode multisyllable words.
d. Read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words.

LAFS.3.RF.4.4 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
a. Read on-level text with purpose and understanding.
b. Read on-level prose and poetry orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and
expression on successive readings.
c. Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition

Budget Narrative

I would like to create 40 Literacy Kits using durable zippered pouches. These pouches will be skill specific and contain a hands on phonics activity, a phonics game, a Sunshine State Reader or other High Interest trade book and/or a Reading Comprehension Skill game (Scholastic's BOB Decodable books that help students learn phonics concepts.) Any books purchased would be approved by the media specialist before purchase.

Materials will be ordered from Lakeshore Learning, Scholastic and Amazon.
