What will be done with my students

When working with kids and sports we noticed that our wheelchair bound student was not able to take part in any of the basketball lessons that involved shooting. We started to note all of the ways in which an activity was difficult or impossible for the student to perform. After attending the Adaptive Physical Education course through ShapeAmerica.org my co-teacher and I brainstormed ways in which we could change or level the playing field so that not only our wheelchair bound student could participate more fully, but other students with physical or intellectual impairments as well. One of the items, a toddler basketball hoop, will be used by our wheelchair bound student. It is not possible for that student to get the ball high enough into the air to shoot at a full size hoop. The adjustable toddler hoop will allow any height-challenged student to practice the coordination of the shooting/throwing form. Once that skill is mastered we would like to move to a full size (in diameter) hoop that is only several fe

Benefits to my students

These adjustable hoops will allow students with limited strength and height to play basketball. I have witnessed students give up because they shoot and shoot at the tall hoops only to miss over and over. These shorter hoops will help develop their shooting strength as well as their close-range hand eye coordination. They will instill a sense of accomplishment and confidence. The difference in balls will help develop their arm muscle strength. The ramp will help our wheelchair bound student with rolling and pitching activities in sports such as kickball. This ramp will help a student that often feels awkward with their lack of mobility, take an active, central role on the field.

Budget Narrative

Two toddler hoops to simulate a full court game for students with a height disadvantage. One ramp to allow students with physical impairments to roll or pitch a ball. Two full size, floor basketball hoops to accommodate growth and progression amongst students with physical impairments.
